Colour Fields is the aura portrait practice of artist Kate Mitchell.
Inspired by the tradition of the travelling portrait studio, Colour Fields connects with communities through live aura portrait sessions that capture the atmosphere of a moment.
Using the AuraCam 6000, an analogue camera developed by Guy Coggins in the 1970s, each portrait is created from data gathered through hand sensors that measure subtle biofeedback from the body. This information is translated into colour surrounding the sitter.
The image is printed instantly on Fuji film, and each session includes a short intuitive interpretation of the colours, their placement, and the qualities they may reflect.
Driven by curiosity, connection, and joy, Colour Fields offers a portrait not only of a person, but of the energy they bring to a particular moment, a reminder that we both shape and are shaped by the atmosphere around us.
Colour Fields has appeared at institutions and events including the Powerhouse Museum, the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Netflix media launch, and private functions.
